Man into night

The light was ending abruptly, and I had to dodge a coworker to get this shot. No doubt he would stop to talk. Fortunately the shadows were beginning to overcome everything, and so I was hidden easily behind a sign. Street shooing always involves a bit of luck, so when you’re running out of time you have to make everything count. While my coworker passed this man crossed the street into the area I was hoping for. My attention was split. It always happens that way.

Peering into a bright light

“You should take a picture of the sun.”
“I already have a bunch of those. How about I take a photo of you?”
“Sure.”

He gave me a thumbs up when we were done and didn’t care to see his image.

Caught between stations

There’s a lot in this photo. I was walking down the street and just froze realizing what was here, and took about ten minutes after setting up to just wait for a moment. After shooting about 30 shots I felt I had something. What I didn’t know is I captured this guy sprinting down the street. I hadn’t even noticed him! Where he was going, or why… that is not known, not when you catch a ghost in frame. Certainly he’s between where he was and where he’s going. That was enough for me. I’m quite happy with this rendering of the image. It took me hours to complete and multiple tries to get right. I know it won’t be for everyone, but it’s definitely for me. So, I’m happy it’s mine. There’s just so much happening in the photo, and I draw a lot of different meanings out of it. I won’t share any of them. That’s everyone else’s job to decide what it’s about to them!

The back gate at Wrigley

I know I say I try not to post from the same scene back-to-back days, but the subject matter for yesterday and today is so different that it doesn’t bother me so much. This is the right-field corner of Wrigley Field during a game last September. The stadium lights are so bright and create massive unbalance between the lighted and unlighted areas in the street. Your eyes kind of struggle back here against that contrast, so color becomes secondary. I took it out and left this a black & white conversion instead.

Down Roslyn Place

This is one of those streets you cross and stop in the middle for a few seconds before you keep walking. Only I stopped and put my bag down and got out my tripod and took a photo. It’s nondescript and like a million places, but it’s got the glow and the depth and the shadow. I spent two minutes here shooting but it took part of two days editing the photo to get it right. I needed a clear head after struggling with the hue. Taking the color out was the only way to make it work for me.

Gradual left gradual right

I took this just after midnight while driving through a massive thunderstorm. I had my camera out trying to capture lightning over a freight train, but it never materialized. Rather than putting the camera away, I left it on the dash and took a few 10-second exposures on the way home. This was the last and only 20-second exposure. I focused the camera on the road in front of me at a stoplight and then released the shutter after driving for a while. It just so happened that I made a gradual left and then right while taking this exposure, making the street lights and green lights look like they slide across the horizon. I’m not sure where the reds come from, but I found them in post-processing.
