A sliver and slices

The moon and some color, or is it a moon and the color?

Man into night

The light was ending abruptly, and I had to dodge a coworker to get this shot. No doubt he would stop to talk. Fortunately the shadows were beginning to overcome everything, and so I was hidden easily behind a sign. Street shooing always involves a bit of luck, so when you’re running out of time you have to make everything count. While my coworker passed this man crossed the street into the area I was hoping for. My attention was split. It always happens that way.

Digital overcast

Head in the clouds better than head in the sand? Sky on a building.

Refracted sky

While it’s a bad idea, I shot this whilst driving. Sorry. I actually went around the block to get it, shot it out the window over my shoulder and never stopped. I think I was going 30 or 35. This wasn’t a case of being lazy, it was just a situation where there was a forest preserve on the other side of the street and no parking. A light storm was building up over the backside of this building, but to the east it was all blue skies.

Mirror wall intersection

I’ve tried to be more aware of details in recent shoots, so I picked an intersection the other night and stayed there for the ten minutes I had. Just as I was about to leave these cars’ bumpers peaked out from behind the marble wall on my left, so I set up to get them as they made their initial move. The effect is not quite the double image I expected, but it is still very effective to my eye. Often times when shooting at night long exposures and low ISO levels are beneficial, but in this situation a shutter speed of a second or less was needed in order to give the outline of the vehicles. I had to correct a lot of noise in the resulting image, but that’s kind of fun when you know the result is executed to your satisfaction.

Monument with Standing Beast

This sculpture is one of the best in Chicago – after it rains. Before it rains there are no reflections, no bouncing colors off the pavement. After it rains, everything goes crazy and if you get down low in the puddles with a tripod you can make it all jump off the page. The sculpture is nicknamed “Snoopy in a blender,” but I like the idea of it being a beast. Snoopy is no beast.
