The lobbyists

They look like people. They talk like people. They’re likely statues propped up by whoever owns the key to the door. Too big to be human. You’re on the outside.

We congregate alone

Groups of unwitting people are the best thing ever to photograph. It’s just endless and constant and disjointed, which makes it perfect for those strange little moments of clarity. I’ve been watching all summer for opportunities to present them, and now that I’m running out of warmer days the better ones are becoming recognizable.

Held by the afternoon

This guy seemed really edgy and nervous. He had boxed himself in between two buildings behind a sculpture and was sucking on what was apparently one of many cigarettes. He couldn’t stand still. He spit. He puffed. He looked into the light for only a second, and I snapped this photo. Then he looked right at me and watched me snap a second. I didn’t wait to find out if he was unhappy with me shooting him, but continuing on down the street I checked the back of the camera, which showed him looking mostly peaceful with his eyes closed. They both captured a shattered stained glass window and its reflection behind him.

Re-tractor

This image was posted once previously in color, but I’d forgotten about the black & white version. At the time I couldn’t decide which I liked better but was more in a color mood. I’d say about a quarter of all the photographs I make go through a rather serious examination for color or B&W testing before I post them. Color normally wins. I felt the original posting looked more like a painting and this a drawing.
