Botanic garden river

I can’t remember what possessed me to take this at the time, but I’m sure it was something to do with the backlighting. I love that sort of thing. It’s not really a river, I guess, but it did sparkle a bit in the sun. I had to jump up on a stone wall and balance kind of crazy to get in position to keep the sun mostly out of my lens. I like the idea that you can’t quite make out what’s on the other bank.

The sensory garden

I didn’t have but a couple of hours at the Chicago Botanic Garden, so I made the time I had work for me. I found potentially the highest ground of the garden with an obscured view of the water through this patch of trees. The area is considered a “sensory garden” for the sights, smells and sounds. I noticed some crickets and this mess of trees between me and the lake. The way they contorted had them looking off-balance, like they could topple over at any moment.

Pointed planter

OK, it might be a fountain with a planter at the far end, but Pointed Planter is better than Pointed Fountain. I waited… and waited… and waited… and continued to wait for everyone to leave the area. It was high traffic time at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and a little middle-aged Chinese man even stood over my shoulder waiting to see what I was going to do here. I don’t mean he was a few feet away, I mean he was over my shoulder. I could hear him breathing. He didn’t ask a thing. He just got closer and stood there in great anticipation of what was to come. In the end, he may have been disappointed, because he didn’t say anything, backed up a few steps and whirled away. His wife gave me a head nod like “thank you” and followed him out the gate.

Rainbow right

Another day with an unexpected little discovery. These things keep life interesting. When you show up at a botanic garden you expect flowers to be your main color source. On this day the fountain won. This rainbow stretched through the misty spray maybe 100 yards outward from the fountain’s base. I’d guess the water shoots 50-60 feet in the air. I have no idea if this rainbow is a regular occurrence. It would seem to me that the light and wind would have to be just right. I’ll guess you can see it for a short stretch of time on most days.
